What does a normal spring look like in mid-Missouri?

Spring gets off to a slow start in mid-Missouri, ramping up during April and May as temperatures start to climb.
March is a transition month from winter to spring, with brief warm-ups in between cool spells. The average high temperature climbs to 61 by the end of March, to 70 by the end of April, warming to 79 by the end of May.
Nights become warm and muggy with average lows climbing into the 60s.
The heat becomes much more noticeable by July and August with average daytime highs in the upper 80s and July is on average the hottest month of the summer.
As thunderstorm chances increase, rainfall normally becomes abundant during the spring.
The 30 year average rainfall jumps from 2.91" in March up to 4 and a half inches in April and nearly 5 inches in May which is normally our wettest month. During the summer months, average rainfall amounts come in around 4 and a half inches each month.
Thunderstorms become more likely as we head through the spring and so does the threat of severe weather and tornadoes. In March, the highest tornado risk is south but shifts north and west during April and May when we have the highest risk of tornadoes. As summer moves in, the highest tornado risk shifts north.
However, it is possible to have tornadoes any month in mid-Missouri.
You can see from this graph that during April, May and June most tornadoes occur with over half during the hours of 3 to 11 p.m. Although the occurrences go down during summer and Fall, it is still possible to have a tornado in mid-Missouri at any time.
