Southern Cal starting cornerback Josh Shaw was suspended indefinitely Wednesday after he acknowledged that he lied about how he injured his ankles last weekend.

Shaw, a team captain, initially said he suffered two high ankle sprains while jumping from a second-story balcony onto concrete to rescue his 7-year nephew, who was in distress in a pool and did not know how to swim.

The schools investigated the incident afer receiving several calls questioning the authenticity of the story.

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," Southern Cal coach Steve Sarkisian said in a statement. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story.

"I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized. Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. Honesty and integrity must be at the center of our program. I believe Josh will learn from this. I hope that he will not be defined by this incident and that the Trojan Family will accept his apology and support him."

Multiple reports cited police sources that a man named Josh Shaw was named in a break-in a few miles from the USC campus last weekend. The Los Angeles Police Department said no one has been officially named as a suspect as of Wednesday morning.

The school did not indicate what actually happened to cause Shaw to injure his ankles.

"My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world," Shaw said earlier. "I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."

The Los Angeles Times said police responded to a call at 10 p.m. Saturday night, when a caller reported hearing a woman screaming from a third-floor unit. A neighbor reported seeing a black man with dreadlocks run across or scale a balcony. The description matches Shaw. One female resident of the complex questioned, per the Times, told police "Sounds like my boyfriend, Josh Shaw."

Shaw, a senior who has played safety and cornerback for the Trojans, has been expected to help anchor the secondary. At 6 feet 1, he is big cornerback with a high football IQ.
