COLUMBIA, Mo. -

The 2014 Mid-Missouri Soap Box Derby kicks off this Sunday, June 8, in downtown Columbia.

43 young drivers from all across the area will be competing this year. Drivers will come from Ashland, Boonville, Eldon, Harrisburg, Rocheport, and Columbia.

The first soap box derby in Columbia was in 1938.

Numerous local celebrities will vie for bragging rights among their peers.

MU System President Tim Wolfe will make his racing debut against incoming CPS Superintendent Peter Stiepleman. The running battle between the City of Columbia and Boone County will be highlighted by Mayor Bob McDavid and Presiding Commissioner Dan Atwill.

Defending physician champion J.T. Hagan from Tiger Pediatrics will take on former winner Tim Fete of the MU Women and Children's Hospital.

The media race will feature ABC 17's own Joey Parker taking on KRCG 13's Zach Paul.

The race begins Sunday at 8:00 a.m. starting at 7th and Broadway. The event is free, and family friendly.
