JESSIEVILLE, Ark. -

A five-year-old boy, who survived the tornado that tore through Moore, Okla., was killed by a Bullmastiff dog on Sunday in Arkansas.

“The child was putting on some shoes and was crying and upset,” said Garland County, Ark., Deputy Scott Hinojosa.  “The dog possibly took that as being aggressive and at that time the child was attacked.”

Lynn Geiling, the dog’s owner, tried to pull the dog off the boy, according to ABC 17 News sister station FOX 16. Geiling told police by the time she was able to pull the dog off, the boy suffered injuries that deputies described as “major lacerations” to his head and neck.

Deputies said the boy and his two-year-old sister had been staying with the Geiling’s family friends, while their parents worked to rebuild their home that was destroyed in the May 20 tornado.

The dog ran away after the incident and as of Sunday night, animal control had not yet captured it. Investigators have not determined whether the dog’s owner will be charged for the incident.
