The hot sauce Sriracha is doing a lot more than spicing up food, according to the city that houses the popular condiment's production plant. A lawsuit filed by the city of Irwindale, Calif., claims the smell coming out of the plant is also burning residents' eyes and throats and causing headaches.
The lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court last week, claims the odor coming from the plant is a public nuisance and asks that production at the plant be stopped until maker Huy Fong Foods submits a plan to reduce the chili smell that emanates from the facility, according to The Associated Press.
City officials had met with Huy Fong Foods representatives several times to discuss the spicy odor. While the company was initially receptive, they have since denied there was a problem, pointing out the employees working in the plant haven't come forward with similar complaints, the city's attorney told The Los Angeles Times.
Huy Fong Foods opened the 655,000-square-foot plant in Irwindale last year. It had operated out of two buildings about 10 miles away in Rosemead, Calif., since the late 1980s, according to the AP. Chili for a year's worth of sauce is processed only between September and December.
A judge is expected to rule on Thursday, according to The Los Angeles Times.
