NRA speaker: Keep gun safes in kids' rooms
The National Rifle Association is raising eyebrows with its latest suggestion that gun owners keep a gun safe in their kids' rooms for home defense.
Gun safety advocate and firearms instructor Rob Pincus made the suggestion during his well-attended seminar "Home Defense Concepts" at the NRA's annual meeting in Houston last week, according to a video posted by ThinkProgress.org.
Because most parents will instinctively run to their children uring a home invasion, Pincus said gun owners should put a gun safe in their kids' rooms.
"If that alarm goes off and the glass breaks and the dog starts barking, what’s the instinct that most people are going to have, in regards to, 'Am I going to run across the house to get the gun, or am I going to run over here to help the screaming kid?'" he said. "And if I’m going to go to the kid anyway, and I have an extra gun and an extra safe, why not put it in their closet?"
Pincus acknowledged there is "an emotional push back" to such an idea.
"Here’s my position on this. If you’re worried that your kid is going to try to break into the safe that is in their bedroom, with a gun in it, you have bigger problems than home defense," he said to laughter from the audience.
Left-leaning bloggers and analysts scoffed at the suggestion, with the Daily Kos going to so far as to call the NRA "out of their d*mn minds."
An author and former police officer, Pincus teaches intruder defense courses in schools across the country, according to his Facebook page.
