A New York man celebrating his 96th birthday found a dead rat in his birthday cake.
Joe Valente made the discovery after taking a few bites of his favorite German apple ring cake.
"He said, 'It doesn't taste right,'" Valente’s nephew, Neil Gold, told New York TV station WABC.
When Gold cut the cake, they found what appeared to be a line of black mold. They flipped the cake over, and discovered a rat's tail.
The cake had been bought from the King Kullen grocery store in the Hamlet of Commack in Suffolk County, N.Y.
Grocery store officials said they were investigating.
Valente didn't contract food poisoning, but it's fair to say he's off cake for a while.
