A pod of 10 dolphins came to the aid of a distance swimmer threatened by a shark off the coast of New Zealand.

Adam Walker was attempting to swim the waters of Cook Strait recently when he noticed the great white shark underneath him, Yahoo! News reported.

Coincidence or not, the group of dolphins soon surrounded him and stayed by his side until the shark swam off.

"I'd like to think they were protecting me and guiding me home!!!" Walker wrote on Facebook shortly after he finished the 16-mile journey.

He was swimming to raise money for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
