Kevin Costner was born in California on Jan. 18, 1955.
The family moved around quite a bit for his father’s job, but Costner managed to spend his time singing in the church choir and writing. Costner was also an athlete growing up, excelling at baseball, football and basketball.
Costner graduated from Cal State- Fullerton with a degree in business. While he took acting classes, Costner was focused on starting a career in marketing.
After marrying his college sweetheart and getting a job in marketing, Costner’s life changed when he met Richard Burton on a plane. He convinced Costner to pursue acting. Costner took Burton’s advice, quit his job and moved to Hollywood.
Costner’s first big break came when he was cast in “The Big Chill” in 1983. However, his scenes ended up being cut out of the final version of the movie.
Costner’s work wasn’t for nothing, though. The director of “The Big Chill,” Lawrence Kasdan, liked Costner’s work and cast him in “Silverado” in 1985.
In 1987 he appeared in “The Untouchables” with Robert De Niro and Sean Connery.
Costner played in the baseball hit “Bull Durham” in 1988. He co-starred with Susan Sarandon.
Costner played in another baseball-themed movie in 1989 – “Field of Dreams.”
In 1990 Costner showed he had talent in front of and behind the camera when he starred in and directed “Dances With Wolves.” The film won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. Costner was also nominated for Best Actor.
In 1991 Costner starred in “JFK” alongside Gary Oldman and Jack Lemmon.
Costner co-starred with Whitney Houston in “The Bodyguard” in 1992.
In 1993 Costner joined Clint Eastwood and Laura Dern in “A Perfect World.”
Costner starred in “Wyatt Earp” in 1994 alongside Dennis Quaid and Gene Hackman.
1995 Costner starred in the large-budget film “Waterworld.”
Costner took to the golf course in “Tin Cup” in 1996.
Costner returned to the baseball diamond in “For Love of the Game” in 1999.
In 2003 Costner starred in “Open Range” alongside Robert Duvall and Diego Luna.
In 2005 Costner starred alongside Jennifer Aniston and Shirley MacLaine in “Rumor Has It.”
Costner co-starred with Ashton Kutcher in “The Guardian” in 2006.
In 2008 Costner played in the political comedy “Swing Vote.”
Costner starred alongside Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper and Tommy Lee Jones in “The Company Men” in 2010.
In 2012 Costner starred in the TV miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys.”
Costner played in the summer blockbuster “Man of Steel” in 2013.
